Your CEO forwards you a headline about ads in ChatGPT and asks one question: “Should we be running ads on Claude and Gemini too?” You start digging and find a mess of announcements, denials, tests and rumors. Some assistants show ads. Some promise they never will. Some are “exploring” it.
AI assistant ads are paid placements that appear inside or around the answers an AI assistant gives. Today that includes sponsored units in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews. For most brands, the bigger question is which assistants you can reach with ads and which ones you can only reach through organic visibility.
In this article, you’ll find a platform-by-platform status check for Claude, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Grok, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity, plus which ones are worth testing and how paid and organic AI visibility work together.
Status verified October 2026.
| Assistant | Ads today? | Status as of October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Yes | Ads on Free and Go plans in 89 countries, with 100,000+ advertisers. Paid plans are ad-free. |
| Google AI Mode | Yes | Testing since May 2025. New Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers announced in May 2026. |
| Microsoft Copilot | Yes | Ads appear in Copilot responses. Eligible Microsoft Advertising campaigns are opted in automatically. |
| Claude | No | Anthropic says Claude will remain ad-free. |
| Gemini app | No | No ads today. Google says its focus is AI Mode but a format that works there could transfer to the Gemini app. |
| Grok | No in-answer ads found | Elon Musk said in August 2025 that ads would come to Grok answers. We found no documented placement as of October 2026. |
| Perplexity | No | Phased out the ads it began testing in 2024. |
No, Claude doesn’t have ads, and Anthropic has said it won’t add them. On February 4, 2026, Anthropic published a post titled “Claude is a space to think.” In it, the company wrote: “Claude will remain ad-free” (source: Anthropic).
Anthropic’s reasoning is that conversations with AI assistants are different from search or social media. People share more context and often discuss personal topics. Anthropic said ads in that setting would be “incompatible with what we want Claude to be.” It also said it would rather earn revenue through enterprise contracts and paid subscriptions.
So when people search for “Claude ads,” they usually mean one of two things. Either they want to advertise inside Claude, which isn’t possible, or they’re asking about Anthropic’s own advertising. For marketers, the takeaway is the first one.
That doesn’t mean Claude is out of reach. Claude cites websites when it searches the web, and its web search runs on Brave Search. Earning a citation there is an organic job. It comes down to crawlable pages, ranking in Brave for buying queries and being named on the third-party pages Claude reads.
The Gemini app doesn’t have ads. In December 2025, Dan Taylor, Google’s VP of Global Ads, said there were “no ads in the Gemini app and there are no current plans to change that.” In January 2026 at Davos, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said Google had no plans for ads in Gemini, while leaving the door open long term (source: 9to5Google).
The picture shifted in spring 2026. On April 29, Google’s chief business officer Philipp Schindler said: “Our focus right now is on AI Mode, but it’s fair to say that we really believe a format that works well in AI mode would transfer successfully to Gemini app.” He added: “We’re not rushing anything here” (source: Business Insider).
Here’s the distinction that matters. There are no ads in the Gemini app today, but Google already sells ads around Gemini-powered experiences in Search. AI Overviews and AI Mode both run on Gemini models, and both carry ads. When someone says “Gemini ads,” they may mean either.
If you want to reach Gemini app users now, the path is organic. If you want to reach people using Gemini-powered answers in Google Search, ads are already an option.
Yes. Google began testing ads in AI Mode in May 2025, saying ads may appear below and integrated into AI Mode responses where relevant. It named Performance Max, Shopping and broad match Search campaigns, including AI Max, as eligible (source: Google Ads & Commerce blog).
At Google Marketing Live on May 20, 2026, Google introduced new formats for AI Mode (source: Google):
Google also introduced Business Agent for Leads, a conversational agent that answers questions for service businesses and qualifies leads. The foundation for all of this is AI Max for Search, AI Max for Shopping and Performance Max.
For advertisers, AI Mode ads aren’t a separate campaign type you set up from scratch. You become eligible through the campaigns you already run. That makes AI Mode the easiest AI assistant ad inventory to test if you’re already on Google Ads. We cover how AI Mode works for organic visibility in our guide to generative engine optimization.
Not inside Grok’s answers, based on what we could find. In August 2025, Elon Musk told advertisers that ads would come to Grok’s answers, describing paid placements that would show relevant products when someone asks Grok for help solving a problem (source: TechCrunch).
As of October 2026, we found no official documentation of ads showing inside Grok responses and no self-serve way to buy that placement. What does exist is Grok inside X’s ad tools. In July 2026, X began beta testing a Grok integration in Ads Manager that gives advertisers AI guidance on their campaigns (source: Social Media Today). That’s a tool for building X ads, not ad inventory inside Grok.
If you’re seeing claims about Grok ads, check whether they mean ads inside Grok’s answers or Grok features in X’s ad platform. They’re not the same thing.
Yes. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US on February 9, 2026 (source: OpenAI Help Center). On October 21, 2026, OpenAI said ads were available in 26 new countries, 89 in total, and that more than 100,000 advertisers had used the platform. OpenAI also said more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week (source: OpenAI).
How ChatGPT ads work today, according to OpenAI’s help center:
ChatGPT ads are the most developed AI assistant ad option right now. For the full setup, read our guides to ChatGPT ads, the OpenAI Ads Manager and ChatGPT sponsored agents.
Yes. Microsoft Advertising serves ads in Copilot, including ads shown in Copilot responses (source: Microsoft Learn). A few details matter for planning:
If you already run Microsoft Advertising, you may already be showing up in Copilot.
No. Perplexity began testing ads in 2024 and has since phased them out, as Search Engine Land reported in February 2026, citing the Financial Times (source: Search Engine Land). Perplexity said at the time that it handled about 780 million monthly queries.
For brands, Perplexity is an organic channel. You earn visibility by being cited in its answers.
The right test depends on your business model and where you already advertise.
Start with Google. If you run Shopping or Performance Max, you’re likely already eligible for AI Mode inventory. Make sure your product feed answers the detailed questions people ask in AI Mode, such as size, use case, materials and comparisons.
Then test ChatGPT ads if you’re in a supported country, especially for products people research before buying. Shopping questions are a natural fit for a sponsored unit below the answer.
ChatGPT and Google AI Mode are the two to watch. B2B buyers use AI assistants to build shortlists, compare vendors and understand categories, and both platforms now sell ads around those answers.
Run small, controlled tests, and check what Google has made available for your account, such as Business Agent for Leads. In Microsoft Copilot, you may already be eligible through existing campaigns, so check your Microsoft Advertising setup.
For Claude, the Gemini app, Perplexity and Grok, organic visibility is the only way in today. That means clear pages that answer specific buyer questions, strong rankings in the search indexes these assistants use and mentions on the third-party sites they cite. For Claude, that means Brave Search. For Gemini-powered experiences, it means Google.
Our guide to GEO vs SEO explains how organic AI visibility builds on the SEO work you already do.
AI assistant ads only cover part of the picture. Even on platforms with ads, the answer itself stays organic. OpenAI keeps ads separate from ChatGPT’s response, and Google labels its AI Mode ad formats “Sponsored”. The recommendation inside the answer still has to be earned.
The strongest approach is to treat paid and organic AI visibility as one program. Organic work earns your brand a place inside the answers. Paid placements reach people at the moment they’re close to a decision. Data from each helps the other: the questions that trigger your ads show you which pages to build, and the pages that earn citations show you which offers to promote.

No. Claude doesn’t show ads, and Anthropic said in February 2026 that Claude will remain ad-free. Brands can only reach Claude users through organic visibility, which means earning citations when Claude searches the web through Brave Search.
The Gemini app doesn’t have ads as of October 2026. Google has said its focus is ads in AI Mode, and that a format that works there could transfer to the Gemini app later. Google already shows ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode, which run on Gemini models.
Yes. Google has tested ads in AI Mode since May 2025, and Performance Max, Shopping and broad match Search campaigns, including AI Max, are eligible. In May 2026, Google announced Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers, both labeled “Sponsored.”
We found no documented ads inside Grok’s answers as of October 2026. Elon Musk said in August 2025 that ads would come to Grok answers. X has added Grok to its Ads Manager as a beta tool for advertisers, but that’s not ad inventory inside Grok.
Ads show on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans for adult users in supported countries. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans are ad-free, and Free users can choose an ad-free option with lower usage limits.
No. Claude has no ad platform and Anthropic has committed to keeping it ad-free. To reach Claude users, focus on getting cited when Claude searches the web.
No. Ads appear next to or below AI answers, but the answer itself stays organic. Brands still need GEO to be named in the recommendations, and several major assistants, including Claude, the Gemini app and Perplexity, don’t sell ads at all.
